  • WHO works to achieve greater policy coherence between trade and health policy so that international trade maximizes health benefits and minimizes health risks, especially for poor and vulnerable populations.

Bartle, Adam. “” Web

  • A blog discussing structural violence. It often focuses on the issue of food security in the United States. Poverty, inequality, violence, and social injustice are common and tie into the issue of food availability and thus I found this blog informative on certain issues.

Young Farmers Coalition. Web

  • A website about farming in the United States. It discusses the economic and structural obstacles that the new generation of farmers faces. There are many issues at play if we are to curb the economic imbalances that create the structural difficulties for younger farmers and the local food movement.

Youth Food Movement. Web

  • The current food system is unsustainable and many diverse projects in local communities have been initiated to create change. This is one of the projects that have been enacted on the community level to produce sustainable agriculture.

Shape Up Somerville. Web

  • A local campaign, funded in part by Tufts. It is a way for us to get involved in our own community in order to increase daily physical activity and healthy eating. Its value lies in its ability to change and enact new policy related to food and food consumption.

Pollan, Michael. Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation. Penguin Press. 2013

  • After reading Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan, I became interested in his writing. This is the link to his new book, Cooked. The modern food system leads to a reliance on corporations to process our food. Apart from the obvious health problems associated with this, it disrupts an essential link to the natural world, and weakens our inter-personal relationships. Pollan delves into the social connections associated with cooking on a small-scale.

Community Food Security Coalition. Web

  •  An organization working at the local and international levels to build community food security. Its intent is to build self-reliant and sustainable communities that ensure access to affordable food. Food insecurity is an issue of great importance for us in the United States, and this is one organization working towards ensuring it. 


Campbell, Marcia Caton. “Building a Common Table: The Role for Planning in Community Food Systems.” Journal of Planning Education and Research 23.4 (2004): 341-355.

  • Looks at how food interest groups interact in order to make an impact, either cooperatively or individually. Campbell discusses how interconnected community food systems have the potential to shape the identity of local individuals.

Campbell, Cathy C. “Food insecurity: a nutritional outcome or a predictor variable?” Division of Nutritional Sciences, Cornell University Press. Ithaca, NY. The Journal of Nutrition. 1991, 121(3):408-415

  • A study that looks at food insecurity quantitatively. It is a definable phenomenon and its indicators should be necessary components of the core measures of the nutritional state of communities and implement policy.

Lane, Sandra D. “Structural violence, urban retail food markets, and low birth weight.” Health and Wellness, Syracuse University, New York. 2008. 418-5

  • This paper investigates urban retail food markets and health in Syracuse, New York. Most urban food markets do not cell fress produce or dairy products because it is not economically feasible. Their subsistence is primarily based around lottery tickets and tobacco, and a quantitative analysis actually show that women in close proximity to these markets are of low health and produce children of below average birth weights.
